The New Mexico State University Student Subunit of the American Fisheries Society is an organization of undergraduate and graduate students interested in fisheries management,
ecology, and conservation. Originally chartered in 1972, the subunit currently has 15 graduate and undergraduate members. Meetings take place on the first and third Wednesday of each month in Knox Hall on the NMSU campus.
The officers for 2009-2010 are Matt Zeigler (President), Zack Tiemann (Vice-President), Jennifer Redman (Secretary), and Amanda Ginithan (Treasurer). Faculty advisors are Colleen Caldwell and Wiebke Boeing.
In the last year the subunit has cooperated with several groups and state departments on projects both at NMSU and throughout southern New Mexico. Some of the activities that the unit participated in included the Burn Lake Cleanup in Las Cruces and the annual Kid’s fishing clinic. The group also worked with the New Mexico Department of Environment (NMED) to plant willows and place instream wood structures in Black Canyon Creek and with the Mescalero Apache Indian Reservation to conduct stream surveys on the Rio Ruidoso. In the coming year we look forward to continuing further surveys on the Rio Ruidoso and restoration work with NMED on Gilita and Willow Creeks. We are also looking for additional volunteer opportunities for the spring and fall 2010 semesters.
Upcoming events, club activities, as well as links to job boards will be posted regularly on our website so check often for new information.
